Celebrating our Junior Development Team 23/24

Our 2023/2024 JDR Team have been amazing representatives of our Club over the past 12 months. Their focus for the year was the inaugural Rookie Cup, with support at VDHS rounds if they chose to attend. Below is a snapshot of each member the the year they had.

Claire Matthews

Claire has had a really exciting year on the Junior Development team.

After racing her first KoB season, and an exciting Cressy descent race where she had a faster time than her older Sister, Claire was really excited to develop her skills and ride new and more technical tracks for the first time.

In the Rookie cup, she discovered she loves steep tech, and really embraced racing new tracks, coming first overall in the Under 13s category.

With confidence from the Rookie Cup, Claire was super keen to step up to VDHS races. She raced You Yangs, Mount Baw Baw, Narbethong and Mount Taylor, and is looking forward to doing a full VDHS season this year.

In March, she headed over to Adelaide to race in Round 3 of the National series at Eagle park. Claire was riding incredibly well all weekend. It was great to see her determination to finish the race, even though she had an unfortunate flat tyre during her race run. Another of Claires highlights during the year would definitely be first place at Mini Muddies. After racing a few VDHS rounds, she decided to step up to A-grade, becoming the first female A-grader in Mini Muddies history. With a time that put her in 6th overall for the event. Finishing up her time on the JD team, Claire had a great 2024 KoB Series taking out Queen of Ballarat for the Under 15 Female category. Congratulations on a fantastic year Claire!

Ewan Govan

Ewie has loved being a part of the Junior development team! Feeling proud to represent Club Mud every time he pulled the jersey on.

As you know, he loves being on his bike, but would rather be racing it. Highlights for the year,

  • Being a part of a team

  • Getting to ride lots of new places and awesome tracks

  • Hanging out in the team tent with the other team members

  • His favorite race was the Interschools event at Threadbo

Jake Sims

Jake has had a great year in the Junior Development Team. He loved competing in the Rookie Cup and eagerly took on the VDHS rounds at Mt Beauty, You Yangs, and Narbethong. A big shoutout to Rod Matthews and Craig Moore for the encouragement and ensuring he made it on to the shuttle bus at Mt Beauty to complete his race run. Despite a minor setback with a broken wrist in April, Jake made a swift recovery and was back in action in time for the 2024 KoB Series.

Noah Broadbent

I’ve really enjoyed being apart of the club mud junior development squad. It’s been great getting to know the other members and progressing my mountain bike skills. Over the year I have participated in the joyride rookie cup and some of the VDHS’s including Barjarg, Mt Baw Baw and the You Yangs. I also competed in KOB but unfortunately in the second round I had a crash and fractured my pelvis. I’m looking forward to being back on my bike soon though.

Marcus Reid

I’m glad that l had the privilege to be part of the Club Mud Junior development squad. I have made heaps of strong connections and friendships along the way. I didn’t really do as well as l wanted during the VIC Downhill series but l have still had a great time hanging out with my mates and the club mud team.

We wish all our JDR's the very best in their next endeavours! Thank you for representing our Club in such a positive manner.
